Christmas is here. It’s time to be merry and be ready for Santa’s gifts! As we come from the land of Santa, we have been Santa’s little helpers, and we participated Heartfelt Annual 35th Christmas/Service Project held at Santa Monica Pier on 20th December. A big thanks goes to our school, University of Santa Monica, for advising us about this project where volunteers can help to distribute toys, gifts, joy, serve delicious food, engage in fun activities, and bring special heart-cheer to several thousand children and their families who have very little.
Did you know that Santa lives in Lapland, Finland? Even though we are so far, we got a little taste of Finnish Christmas treats when we participated Christmas parties with Finns in LA and with our friends in Orange County. Pastries, egg butter (munavoi) with some Karelian pies (karjalanpiirakka), Christmas pies (joulutorttu), rye bread, ginger bread cookies (piparkakku) etc. and glögi, Finnish style Christmas drink! You can see photos of Christmas decorations and treats at http://www.lily.fi/blogit/onnenpaiva.
Christmas Eve & Day gave us a taste of American style celebration as Katja’s cousin invited us to join them.
As Christmas is also the time of giving and receiving, it is good to remember that Christmas is so much more than material exchange. You can give and show love to people near and far, affection and warm thoughts by remembering your loved ones all over the world. It is time when you are surrounded by love and never alone, Christmas is in our hearts.
“Maybe Christmas, “ the Grinch thought, doesn’t come from a store. What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more?” – Dr. Seuss
